A new UCLA study reveals that 91.7 percent of top scripted streaming series have white creators, with 78.9 percent created by white males specifically. The “Hollywood Diversity Report Presents: Streaming Television in 2024” analyzed 224 scripted programs from the top 250 television shows. Only 27 series featured BIPOC creators, while 49 had female creators. Two shows lacked clearly identifiable creators. Female representation in leading roles dropped from 39 percent to 34.3 percent this year, and just 8.3 percent of top shows starred women of color as leads. Four out of five leads were white men. “Unfortunately, this wasn’t unexpected, especially with the election results in 2024,” said Darnell Hunt, UCLA’s executive vice chancellor and provost. “When you shut the door on diversity, you shut out opportunities for more perspectives, collaboration, exploration and growth.” (Story URL)
