Sometimes you can boost your salary by switching jobs. And sometimes you can boost your salary just by crossing state lines.
A new study looked into the states where people have the highest and lowest incomes. To do it, they gave each state a score based on average salaries of the top 5% earners . . . the average of the bottom 20% earners . . . and the median household income overall.
In the end, the Top Five are: Virginia . . . New York . . . New Jersey . . . Washington . . . and Connecticut.
The rest of the Top 10 are: Colorado . . . Minnesota . . . Illinois . . . and Massachusetts. As for the other big states: Texas is #11, California is #13, and Florida is #15.
Arizona came in at a respectable #18.
On the flip-side, the states with the lowest income are West Virginia . . . New Mexico . . . Mississippi . . . Louisiana . . . Maine . . . Rhode Island . . . Alabama . . . Vermont . . . Kentucky . . . and Alaska.
