The kids may be back in school, but summer isn’t officially over yet . . . and there’s plenty of grilling to do over Labor Day weekend.
There’s a new poll out on grilling, and it included the grilled food each state is known for. Americans everywhere enjoy tossing the CLASSICS on the grill, but others enjoy more unique, regional specialties.
Here are 10 of the more unusual things Americans grill:
1. Alaska: Moose burgers. They also like: Grilled salmon and halibut.
2. Florida: Grilled gator. They also like to toss steaks on.
3. South Dakota: Grilled pheasant. They also like a good burger.
4. Wyoming: Grilled bison. They also like regular steaks.
5. Montana: Elk steak. They also like grilling bison steak and brisket.
6. Maine: Grilled fiddleheads. This one is especially odd because it’s a vegetable rather than meat. Fiddleheads are the young, curled shoots of certain ferns. Maine-iacs also like grilled lobster, and mixed vegetables.
7. New Mexico: Roasted green chiles.
8. Delaware: Grilled blue crabs. They also dig regular grilled chicken.
9. Hawaii: Kalbi ribs and Huli Huli chicken. Kalbi is Korean-style short ribs, while Huli Huli chicken is a distinctly Hawaiian, tropical preparation. Hawaiians also like grilled fish and “kalua pork.”
10. Colorado: Rocky Mountain oysters. They’re bull testicles. (Here’s a look at the process.)
Overall, people in Louisiana are most likely to call themselves “grill masters.” 31% of Louisianans who grill would agree with that. Georgia and Illinois are the next most likely, at 28% each.
And the people in Texas are the “most confident in their state’s grill cuisine,” followed by Alabama and California.
