Have you ever said something with good intentions, only to find out it rubbed someone the wrong way?
Because if it sounds condescending, the person will focus on how it was said . . . instead of what was actually being communicated.
Of course, all of this is dependent on your tone, but here are a few everyday phrases that sound condescending:
1. “That’s cute.” It can come across as belittling or patronizing.
2. “Well, actually. . .” And it’s even worse if they follow it up by explaining something you already know.
3. “You’re trying your best.” Or are you just setting low expectations?
4. “You just need to . . .” Not everyone loves receiving instructions.
5. “It’s not that big of a deal.” But what if it’s a big deal to them? Be careful of minimizing their feelings.
6. “You wouldn’t understand.”
