Dictionary.com announced its “Word of the Year” . . . and, we regret to inform you that it is: “Maxxing.”

As you surely know by now, the meaning is . . . essentially . . . DEFINITION-MAXXING. It’s an internet slang term that’s been used in just about every context: Looks-maxxing, fertility-maxxing, friction-maxxing, protein-maxxing, status-maxxing, and on and on AND ON.

They define it like this: “It’s short for ‘maximizing.’ It can be used on its own or added to the end of any word to convey you are doing something to the fullest, or optimizing it as much as possible.”

So it’s “looks-maxxing” for optimizing your appearance . . . “sleepmaxxing” for hacking the best possible night’s sleep . . . or “pheromone-maxxing,” for when people skip showering in an effort to attract others through pheromones.

They also shared four other terms that made their shortlist this year. They are: “Affordability,” “Data Center,” “Odyssey,” and “Unc.”

Last year, Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year was “6-7,” with the shortlist including: “Agentic,” “Aura Farming,” “Gen Z Stare,” and “Tradwife.”
