JOKER TRAILER DROPS: Todd Phillips’ has released the first glimpse of Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. “My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face,” he tells his therapist as he’s shown giving his mom a bath. Joker stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz (as a possible love interest), and Marc Maron; it drops October 4th.
TCM TO HONOR TED TURNER: The TCM Classic Film Festival is set to pay tribute to Turner Classic Movies founder Ted Turner during a special presentation on April 11th. The four-day festival kicks off that night in L.A. Turner helped launch TCM, and also pioneered programming at CNN, TBS, TNT and the Cartoon Network. “Turner Classic Movies was a passion project of mine, born of my love for classic films,” Turner. “I’m very proud to have played a role in honoring these great works through the years, and hope they continue to provide just as much joy and entertainment to TCM viewers as they have to me.”
CHELSEA MANNING DOC SNAGS INTERNATIONAL SALES DEAL: The documentary XY Chelsea, which premieres at Tribeca and will air on Showtime in June, has also snagged international distribution via Dogwoof. The film document’s Manning’s release from prison. NETFLIX SUED: A former Netflix division manager has filed a lawsuit claiming she was fired by the megastreamer Netflix after announcing her pregnancy. In her complaint, Tania Zarak says she began working for Netflix as a manager in the International Originals division in mid-2018, and after announcing her pregnancy in November, was fired.
