Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced the happy news of their first child’s arrival as most modern parents do: on Instagram! Eschewing the typical royal route of a photo opp on the steps of the hospital, Meghan and Harry (or more likely, reps for them) wrote: “We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz.”
They continued: “The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days.”
They have not yet shared the baby’s name or an image of him, but Harry did appear to make an emotional statement about his son’s arrival early Monday morning.
“I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy early this morning, a very healthy boy,” the 34-year-old said with a big smile on his face. “Mother and baby are doing incredibly well.”
Harry said: [“It’s amazing. Absolutely incredible, as I said. I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. And um as every father and every parent would say your baby is absolutely amazing. But this little thing is absolutely to die for so I am just over the moon.”] SOUNDCUE (:24 OC: . . over the moon.)
“It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever possibly imagine,” Harry continued. “How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. But we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing, so we just wanted to share this with everybody.”
He also confessed that he and Meghan are still debating over a few name ideas.
Thomas Markle, who has been estranged from his daughter Meghan after declining to walk her down the aisle at her May wedding at the last minute, wished the pair well.
"I'm delighted to hear that mother and child are doing well," he told The Sun. "I am proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I am sure that he will grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honor.”
He added: "God bless the child and I wish him health and happiness, and my congratulations to my lovely daughter Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, and God save the Queen."
Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, with whom she is reportedly close, is staying with the couple at their new home, Frogmore Cottage.
Buckingham Palace also released a statement saying that all of the royals are “delighted” with the baby’s arrival.
