Robert Redford, Oscar-Winning Actor And Sundance Founder, Dies At 89

Robert Redford, the acclaimed actor and director who founded the Sundance Film Institute, died Tuesday at his Utah home. He was 89. “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” his rep said in a statement. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.” Redford won an Oscar for directing Ordinary People in 1980 and starred in many iconic films including Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Way We Were, Three Days Of The Condor, and All The President’s Men. His last acting role was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Beyond acting, Redford established the Sundance Film Institute in 1981, creating America’s most important independent film festival and launching countless filmmakers’ careers. (Story URL)
