The Marvels now claims two titles following its debut at the domestic box office over the weekend. Pulling in $47 million, the film saw the lowest opening ever for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Deadline reports that it also marked the highest opening ever for a Black female director—as Nia DaCosta, who already made history as the first Black female to direct a Marvel movie, topped Ava DuVernay’s $33 million debut of A Wrinkle in Time in 2018.
