Justin Bieber wrote about the negative aspects of fame, his mental health struggles, drug use and his newfound faith in a lengthy post on Instagram.

“Have u noticed the statistics of child stars and the outcome of their life? There is an insane pressure and responsibility put on a child who’s brain, emotions, frontal lobes (decision making) aren’t developed yet,” Bieber said. “I started doing pretty heavy drugs at 19 and abused all of my relationships. I became resentful, disrespectful to women and angry. I became distant to everyone who loved me, and I was hiding behind, a shell of a person that I had become,” he continued.

He also talked of his descent into bad behavior after a few years of fame. At 18, with “no skills in the real world” and “access to whatever you wanted,” the pitfalls of fame began to catch up with him. “By 20 I made every bad decision you could have thought of and went from one of the most loved and adored people in the world to the most ridiculed, judged and hated person in the world.”

Bieber ultimately wrote the long passage to share a message of hope with fans he said.

“Luckily god blessed me with extraordinary people who love me for me. Now I am navigating the best season of my life ‘MARRIAGE’ !! Which is an amazing crazy new responsibility. You learn patience, trust, commitment, kindness, humility and all of the things it looks like to be a good man,” he said in reference to his wife Hailey Baldwin. The couple confirmed their marriage in November.

“All this to say even when the odds are against you keep fighting. Jesus loves you..BE KIND TODAY> BE BOLD TODAY AND LOVE PEOPLE TODAY NOT BY YOUR STANDARDS BUT BY GODS PERFECT UNFAILING LOVE,” he concluded.

Liam Payne later took to his social media to defend Bieber against what he perceived as media slams. Liam took a photo of a headline from Twitter which read, “Justin Bieber admits to ‘heavy’ drug use and his struggles with fame in candid post.”

Liam added his own message, writing, “So this is the one thing the worlds media picks up on after all he said …? Can anyone else see the problem here?… @justinbieber I think what you did yesterday was incredibly brave and you deserve a little more respect.”

Bieber’s longtime manager Scooter Braun posted a tweet suggesting some alternate headlines to the sensational ones that ran after Bieber’s posted his message.

Several of Justin’s famous friends also sent words of encouragement his way. Several celebrities, including Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Sean Kingston and Khloé Kardashian left comments on his post – whether thanking him for sharing his story and being open about his struggles or just to show him some extra love and support.
