R. Kelly reportedly owes $200,000 in unpaid rent and damages for his Chicago studio. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a new lawsuit was filed on August 7th in Cook County circuit court, claiming that the singer owes more than $201,178 in rent and other charges to the property owner, Midwest Commercial Funding.

The outlet reports that the rent is continuing to accrue.

The owners sued the singer back in January for more than $173,000 in back rent for the studio — which had 66 building code violations when it was inspected by the city.

Kelly defaulted on the lease by failing to pay rent and was forced to move out in January. He also owes for alleged repairs and renovations he started without securing the proper building permits. Kelly reportedly owes at least $50,000 for those repairs.

A court date has been set for October 1st.

In other news, according to BET, Kelly is “miserable” in jail and can’t read his fan mail. His lawyer, Steve Greenberg told the ‘Sun-Times’ that Kelly hasn’t been able to work on any music, watch TV, read books or listen to the radio while in solitary confinement. Kelly is also in low spirits.

The attorney said, “He’s dealing with a lot of stories that have been made up. He’s not a fighter. I’ve seen him cry when he talks about the situation. Now he’s been placed in the MCC’s ‘SHU’ — a cell in solitary confinement away from the jail population and is constantly being moved from cell to cell. He has only the guards to talk to.”

Greenberg said that one of Kelly’s two girlfriends visited him and an uncle named “Uncle Bug.” It is unclear if it was Joycelyn Savage or Azriel Clary who visited the singer.

He also said, “He’s also a spiritual guy, has a Bible with him in his cell, but he can’t read it. It’s basically there for comfort.”

The lawyer added about Kelly’s fan mail, “He is receiving plenty of mail, which is 97% positive and he pores over it.”
