R. Kelly has paid his ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, $62,000 in back child support. According to TMZ, Kelly appeared in Cook County court on Tuesday (May 7th) to face his ongoing child support dispute with Andrea. The singer was jailed back in March for failing to pay more than $161,000 in overdue child support. However, he was released from jail after someone paid the debt on his behalf. Despite the large payment, Kelly reportedly missed the $20,000 per month payments for March, April and May, which are required under his divorce settlement. After the court hearing, Andrea told reporters, “All I can say is that this is a victory for my children. […] I will fight for my children till the end.”
Kelly still owes Andrea $32,000 in interest. She is also asking that Kelly cover the educational expenses for their 21-year-old daughter, Joann, a.k.a Buku Abi.
On another note, the judge who ordered a default judgment against Kelly after the singer failed to respond to a lawsuit filed by one of his alleged victims says that the lawsuit can continue. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Cook County Judge Moira Johnson reinstated the lawsuit after Kelly’s attorneys said that the singer did not respond to the lawsuit because he is illiterate and couldn’t read the documents when they were given to him.
